LIMA, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 people were killed and 37 others injured in southern Peru on Sunday night when a passenger bus plunged some 200 meters into a ravine in Sandia province, Puno region, local police said Monday.
The bus was traveling from the city of Juliaca to San Pedro de Putina Punco District when it plunged into the Inambari River.
Local police rescued 37 passengers trapped in the vehicle's wreckage, who were later taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Traffic accidents are common in Peru, often attributed to poor road and vehicle conditions, as well as hazardous practices such as unlicensed and drunk driving. ■
