Japan dominates first day of Budapest Judo Grand Prix

    BUDAPEST, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Japan ruled on the first day of Budapest Judo Grand Prix, with the gold medals in the women's 48kg, 52kg and men's 60kg and 66kg categories here on Friday.

    Ryuju Nagayama took the men's 60kg gold medal, before the Russian Albert Oguzov. The bronze was shared by Robert Mshvidobadze from Russia and to Amiran Papinashvili from Georgia.

    In this category, Chinese competitor Su Rilege was eliminated in his second fight by Dutch judoka Tornike Tsjakadoea.

    In the men's 66kg category, Kenzo Tagawa won the gold. Egypt took the silver thanks to the skills of Mohamed Abdelmawgoud, while two bronze medals were attributed to Bogdan Iadov from Ukraine and Denis Vieru from Moldova.

    In this category, Chinese competitor Ma Duanbin got eliminated in his first fight by Slovenian opponent Adrian Gomboc.

    In the women's 48kg category, Hiromi Endo won the gold. Her compatriot Tamami Yamazaki came second, while two bronze medals were got by Distria Krasniqi from Kosovo and Marusa Stangar from Slovenia.

    China's Li Yanan was eliminated at her first fight by Katharina Menz from germany.

    In the women's 52kg category, Natsumi Tsunoda won the gold. Belgium's Charline Van Snick came second, while two bronze medals were taken by Chelsie Giles from Great Britain and Ecaterina Guica from Canada.

    China's Wu Shugen was eliminated in her first fight by Reka Pupp from Hungary.

    In the last event of the day, women's 57kg category, Japan did not take the gold, but Brazil did, thanks to the victories of Rafaela Silva. Germany's Theresa Toll came second, while two bronze medals were collected by Christa Deguchi from Canada and Hedvig Karakas from host Hungary.

    China's Zhang Wen was eliminated in her second fight by Canadian Jessica Klimkait.

    Following Grand Prix events in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China, and Zagreb, Croatia, the IJF World Judo Tour has returned to the home of the 2017 World Judo Championships for the final competition before the 2018 World Judo Championships this September in Baku, Azerbaijan.

    This is the third IJF qualification event for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games as 578 judoka from 86 countries and regions compete at the Laszlo Papp Budapest Sports Arena.
