"Game of Thrones", "Fleabag" win big at 71st Primetime Emmy Awards

    LOS ANGELES, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- HBO's "Game of Thrones" and Amazon's "Fleabag" won top awards at the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night, picking up outstanding drama series and outstanding comedy series, respectively.

    "Game of Thrones," an American fantasy drama television series, is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin's series of fantasy novels. The eighth and final season of "Game of Thrones" led the pack with 32 nominations this year but only earned two awards, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

    The HBO epic series won the top drama award for the fourth time. Peter Dinklage won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for "Game of Thrones." It's also the actor's fourth Emmy victory for the role of Tyrion Lannister.

    "Fleabag" dominated the comedy categories with four nods. "Fleabag"'s creator and writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Writing For a Comedy Series for Fleabag's episode 1. Harry Bradbeer won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for episode 1.

    "Fleabag" is a British comedy-drama television show, featuring a dry-witted woman living in London, known only as Fleabag.

    Billy Porter, who plays the ballroom emcee Pray Tell in "Pose," won his first Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. English actress Jodie Comer took home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as a conniving assassin Villanelle in "Killing Eve." It's also Comer's first Emmy win.

    Julia Garner won the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series trophy with her first-ever nomination for her role as young criminal Ruth Langmore for Netflix's series "Ozark."

    Jesse Armstrong walked away with the award for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for "Succession."

    Bill Hader won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor In a Comedy Series for "Barry."

    Tony Shalhoub and Alex Borstein won in the comedy supporting actor and actress categories for Amazon's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel."

    Jharrel Jerome nabbed an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his portrayal of Korey Wise in Netflix's "When They See Us." Michelle Williams took home her first Emmy for Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, for her role as Gwen Verdon in FX's "Fosse/Verdon."

    "A Very English Scandal"'s Ben Whishaw won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie while "The Act"'s Patricia Arquette won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.

    Johan Renck and Craig Mazin won Outstanding Directing, and Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special for "Chernobyl," respectively.

    "Black Mirror: Bandersnatch" won the prize for Outstanding Television Movie. It's the third year in a row that the Netflix's TV series has won the award.

    The 71st annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony was held at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles. It's an American award bestowed by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in recognition of excellence in American primetime television programming.
